

Inaugural JC CoolScience Primary Science Explorer Hackathon 2026 Brings Together Students from 103 Primary Schools to Showcase Inquiry and Innovation

The JC CoolScience Primary Science Explorer Hackathon 2026 (the “Hackathon”) began with its Preliminary Round on 9 May 2026, attracting teams from 103 primary schools across Hong Kong. Applying scientific inquiry and innovative thinking, students designed, tested and refined solutions to explore how vehicles could operate effectively under extreme weather conditions. After a highly competitive selection process, 30 teams advanced to the Final Round, demonstrating their scientific knowledge, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Held on 20 June 2026, the Final Round challenged teams to design and construct vehicle prototypes using a toolkit and materials provided on site. As scenarios evolved throughout the competition, students were required to adapt their strategies and refine their designs in real time. The challenge highlighted participants’ creativity, collaboration and inquiry-driven problem-solving abilities. St. Paul's College Primary School, Alliance Primary School Kowloon Tong and Kwong Ming School were named Champion, First Runner-up and Second Runner-up respectively, while seven additional teams received Merit Awards. The Award Ceremony and Finalists' Exhibition were held at the Hong Kong Science Museum, showcasing students’ innovative solutions and achievements.
Speaking at the Award Ceremony, Dr Gloria Chan, Deputy Secretary for Education, congratulated the winning teams and the recognised Advanced Teachers. She remarked that, in response to the rapid development of innovation and digital technologies, the Education Bureau (“EDB”) is proactively strengthening mathematics, science and technology education in primary and secondary schools, with a focus on enhancing students’ spirit of scientific inquiry and creative problem-solving skills. Dr Chan expressed special gratitude to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for its meticulous planning and promotion of the JC CoolScience project. Through diverse learning activities, including training, competitions, and carnivals, the project promotes inquiry-based learning and extends science exploration to the public. By working hand in hand with the EDB to advance Innovation and Technology education, the project is contributing to nurturing a new generation of talent capable of adapting to and leading the future.
